Fox & Hound HotWire™ Live Wire Tone & Probe Kit: Trace Live 120/220VAC Power Lines - (3388)

The Fox HotWire is powered by a 9 volt battery for Low Voltage tracing or it can be powered by the High Voltage line it is toning. It can generate multiple tones (Pulse or Warble), provides a visual and audible continuity test, and integrates our own True Trace and TripLatch tests while providing overload protection up to 250 VAC. The Hound HotWire is a battery operated handheld lightweight Probe; containing both a thumbwheel Sensitivity control and Signal Strength indicator LED. It has a built-in LED headlights to illuminate dark areas and reduce fluorescent light noise, a bandpass filter to suppress unwanted frequencies, an earphone jack for noisy or quiet work areas, and an easy access battery cover. The HotWire can also trace other powered or unpowered common wires including telephone and cable TV wires, LAN cables, security system wires, and many others. The HotWire Fox also includes a very useful feature called TrueTrace. The HotWire‘s RF signal can be sensed through both building materials and most metal conduit. The HotWire can even trace shallow (up to 6" deep) underground wires, like those commonly used for ‘Invisible Fences’, cable television, telephone, or low voltage landscape lighting. Complete with test leads (24" and 60"), flat blades, pointed probes, alligator clips, hard carrying case and batteries (2-9V).

• Q: I'm considering the "TRIPLETT Circuit Tracer Kit: 0 to 250V AC/DC, Alligator Clips/Carrying Case/Leads, 3388 TRIPLETT" for tracing wires from energized field devices. I want to use vampire clamps to bypass the isolation and tap into the 24vdc signal. I then aim to transmit a signal from the emitter to the receiver to identify the wire in the PLC cabinet. Will this tool meet these requirements?
  A: The TRIPLETT Circuit Tracer Kit can be effective in tracing wires, as long as you're not working with buried cables or large bundles of wires that might mask or interfere with the signal from the wire you're trying to trace. However, we haven't tested the device with vampire clamps, so we can't guarantee compatibility or performance in that specific scenario. It's generally advisable to use the kit with the accessories provided (like the included alligator clips) to ensure optimum performance and safety. If you plan on using additional or alternative accessories, always proceed with caution and ensure they are compatible with the device.
• Q. Can this be used for 12V or 24V systems?
  A. The 3388 can be used on any system up to 250V.
• Q. Is it possible to use this device for tracing wires in automobiles?
  A.Unfortunately, no. Though the 3388 model can be applied to any system up to 250V, it's not suitable for automotive applications, the cable bundles found in automobiles result in a bleed-out from the cable being tested, causing the tone to spread over all cables in the bundle.
