Wood Moisture Meters

Wood is widely used to construct various parts, structures, furniture, and more. Hence, it is a prerequisite that the wood used must be completely dry and devoid of moisture. If wood with even small quantities of moisture is processed to make any structures, it poses the risk of cracking, bacterial and fungal growth, and more. This can be prevented by measuring the amount of moisture in wood by using wood moisture meters. Triplett offers some of the best wood moisture meters in various configurations. We offer digital pin-based and pinless wood moisture meters with user-friendly menu, display screen, and audible as well as visual alarms. Pin-based meters measure the moisture level through direct contact with the wood piece. On the other hand, pinless moisture meters are contactless and measure moisture with the help of electromagnetic waves.

Know More About Triplett Wood Moisture Meter

Understanding Moisture in Wood

Wood is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the environment, and this directly impacts the log strength. So, the increased humidity in air also increases the moisture in wood. This weakens the wood log. Hence, wood is processed before converting it into any structure. However, it cannot be 100% dry either as it will shrink and chip off. An acceptable standard of moisture presence in wood is between 8% and 25%. Also, these values may vary in the inner sections of the wood. The exact moisture percentage required may depend on the application requirement.

Importance of Moisture Measurement in Wood

Measuring the amount of moisture in wood used for any structural purpose is absolutely essential to prevent breakage, warping, or cracking. This is essential in terms of ensuring the quality of the final product and meeting the required industry standards and regulations. Moist wood would never be able to offer any structural stability required for the product. Moisture would lead to decay, bacterial and fungal growth, and so on. On the other hand, dry wood would make the final product brittle. While making the wooden product, the use of adhesives for sticking two parts may be required. Moist wood would not stick and bond well. Hence, to get the right amount of dryness, measuring the level of moisture in the wood piece is crucial.

Types of Wood Moisture Meters

There are broadly two categories of these meters we offer.

  • Pinless Wood Moisture Meters: Our pinless wood moisture meters are non-contact or non-invasive moisture meter, measure the moisture content of wood with the help of electromagnetic waves. These are handy and portable devices with a display screen. They have sensors which sense the moisture in the focused area. These signals enter up to a few inches deep into the wood log and bounce back, and the moisture measurement is calculated. The value is in the form of percentage.
  • Pin Wood Moisture Meters: These are pin-based wood moisture testers. They need to come in physical contact with the wood log to be able to measure the moisture content. These are also handy and compact with a display screen. They come with a lock button that freezes measurement on the display screen which is useful in hard-to-reach areas.

Benefits of Using Wood Moisture Meters

Measuring the moisture level using a wood moisture tester offers many benefits. Here are some of them.

  • Using a wood moisture meter helps provide an accurate output regarding the presence of moisture in certain portions of the wood log or board. This directly has a positive impact on the final product quality and compliance with the required industry standards.
  • This helps establish best practices in terms of forest conservation and sustainable forestry practices.
  • Using good quality moisture meters results in collection of effective data useful for further research and analysis.
  • Once you get accurate measurements through these meters, it helps save on costs and unnecessary wastage of wood.
  • Our wood moisture meters are handy and compactly designed, and can be carried onsite easily. They offer a quick and accurate output in a matter of minutes, and also indicate the level of moisture such as low, medium, or high.
  • You can choose a pin-based or pinless wood moisture meter depending on the application requirement, budget, and other factors.

Applications of Wood Moisture Meters

Here are some application areas of wood moisture testers

  • Wood logs and lumbering activities
  • Construction materials
  • Wooden flooring installation
  • Wood furniture preparation and inspection
  • Firewood as well as wood-based furnaces
  • Scientific research regarding wood properties

How Accurate Are Wood Moisture Meters?

Good-quality and well-calibrated wood moisture meters are highly accurate and help in knowing the right moisture content. While this accuracy may be impacted by certain chemicals, temperature, density, and more, one can set the correction settings accordingly to get the right output. Our moisture meters offer accurate output and can be recalibrated according to the application as well as environmental requirements.

Can Wood Moisture Meters Be Used On Finished Wood Surfaces?

These wood moisture meters are primarily designed for unfinished wood. However, one can check the moisture content in construction materials and furniture which is finished and processed. It is also important to consider paints, coatings, and other chemicals on the wood surface which may hamper the accuracy of the output. There needs to be a margin for possible inconsistencies. Also, the meter needs to be recalibrated according to the current setting.
