Know More About Triplett Power Over Coax

What is Power over Coax and how does it work?

In the Power over Coaxial, the power and video signals in the CCTV applications are supported by a single coaxial video cable. This reduces the need for separate power supplies and cables.

The video signals are the type of alternating current or AC and the power is direct current or DC. Power over Coax CCTV utilizes this difference for operation. DC is provided to the camera; however, if it is directly connected to the video signal, then it may damage the camera. PoC devices are designed to allow both the recorder and camera to prevent the flow of DC through the video signal line and accept the systems providing analog video signals. The AC current is blocked in the power supply system and DC is made to pass through it. The recorders generally offered with the PoC video systems also feature certain special devices, which protect non-PC devices from current spikes. If the camera is not found compatible with PoC, then the recorder will truncate the power supply. However, this power supply may be truncated even if a short circuit is identified in the system. This helps prevent damage of the recorder and end devices.

What is the difference between PoE and PoC?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) and Power over Coax (PoC) both work on the same concept of power and signal transmission through a single cable. The following pointers will help you identify the differences between these two.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a standardized format of power and signal transmission over Cat5e/Cat6/Cat7 cables. PoE is standardized to offer voltages between 37 and 57 volts. This standard has wide applications such as CCTV, WIFI, data networking, access control, and so on. PoE devices will power the line only if they detect a remote receiver or device in the line. When using PoE products, it is important to ensure that you are supplying the right amount of current; else, the products may not work and even impair the working of the network.

PoC Power over Coax cctv is a non-standardized format of power and signal transmission and is more appropriately used with proprietary systems. Unlike PoE, PoC can power the line even if it doesn’t detect a device or receiver remotely. As PoC technology is employed for proprietary systems, the power supply can be set accordingly.

What are the advantages of using the PoC technology for CCTV?

The PoC systems have simpler designs and are easy to install. These systems do not require additional power cables, power supplies, sockets, and connectors. Our PoC devices, including power over coax transmitters, power over coax receivers, and power over coax converters, power over coaxial cable are compactly designed and reduce the need for cables by half. The coaxial cables used in PoC CCTV systems have lower signal attenuation than regular UTP cables. This allows the signal and power transfer to be three times faster than the regular PoE technology. Using a central power supply helps reduce magnetic interferences and power system failures. Our PoC devices can be retrofitted to legacy analog systems.
